When we look for a new job, we are actually looking for an opportunity for professional growth. Our goal is to level up, take on more stimulating challenges, and improve our position (not only financially, but also in terms of personal fulfillment).
Not everyone, however, knows how to structure a real career plan. Some choose the first offer that comes along, others get lost in writing endless CVs, and still others do not engage in true introspection to understand what really motivates them. In this scenario, Artificial Intelligence, and specifically ChatGPT, can become a valuable ally: a virtual coach that asks you the right questions and offers practical insights to define (and achieve) your goals.

Turn ChatGPT into a “career coach”: the right prompt
For AI to function as a true career coach, it is necessary to give precise instructions to ChatGPT. Here is a formula (in italics) that you can copy and paste when you want to start this “coaching-oriented” dialogue:
“You are an expert career coach with extensive experience in helping people accelerate their careers and achieve their professional goals. I want you to ask me questions to understand my ambitions, frustrations, seniority level, current situation, skills, and the parts of my job that I love and hate. Once you have all the information you need, I would like you to give me practical advice on actions to take now to help me reach my goals faster. Ask me the questions one at a time and wait for my response before asking the next one. When you have gathered enough information, I want you to present your response in bullet points, with a summary of what I have said and concrete action advice. If you understand, ask me to describe my current role.”
As you can see, we are “instructing” ChatGPT to behave like a real coach, to delve deeper into our situation through multiple questions and only at the end to provide its analysis and recommendations.
How the conversation works (step by step)
- Copy and paste the prompt you see above into ChatGPT.
- ChatGPT will ask you to describe your current position or role (title, responsibilities, results, etc.).
- Respond with details: if you are already 50 and looking to make a career jump, write it clearly. If there are frustrations (e.g., internal politics, time management, lack of challenges), include them. Remember to include your age, as well as where you live and your family situation; this will help your ChatGPT be more precise.
- ChatGPT will propose further questions to understand your ambitions, aspirations, strengths, and weaknesses. Answer step by step, as you would with a human coach.
- When ChatGPT “thinks” it has enough information, it will formulate a summary of your situation and preferences, followed by practical advice.
A concrete example
Imagine describing your role as “Account Manager in a design agency, with the desire to move to a more strategic managerial level” (put what you are and why you want to change or where you would like to go in quotes). You could add that:
- You feel frustrated by internal power plays.
- You love the client presentation phase, but find administrative bureaucracy boring.
- You would like to develop leadership skills but do not know where to start.
ChatGPT, assuming the role of coach, could summarize your situation and suggest that you:
- Look for an internal mentor or an external Coach to accelerate your managerial growth.
- Work on leadership soft skills with specific courses or resources.
- Redesign your resume and your LinkedIn profile, highlighting your successes.
- Constructively address internal politics, perhaps with negotiation or conflict management techniques.
How it can help you if you are 50 (or older)
Those who, like me, have searched for a job after 50 know that sometimes you feel “out of the loop.” This is where ChatGPT comes in:
- It offers a candid comparison: if you have a doubt, ChatGPT will ask you more questions to frame your sector and then give you targeted advice.
- It provides an action plan based on the information you provide.
- It helps you discover opportunities: it can highlight the importance of your wealth of skills and suggest networking with former colleagues, or updating specific skills.
A 24/7 virtual coach does not completely replace the experience of a “human” coach, but it is nonetheless an invaluable ally for unlocking thoughts and reflections that do not emerge on their own.
Practical tips for using ChatGPT as a coach
- Be honest: the more details you provide, the more accurate ChatGPT’s “diagnosis” will be.
- Don’t be afraid to ask: if ChatGPT proposes generic networking strategies, ask for specific examples.
- Update the information: if your situation changes, say so and get a new round of advice.
- Integrate with real actions: a career plan in a chat is useful, but then you must take action (applications, phone calls, training).
Using ChatGPT as a “career coach” is an unusual but effective approach, if done with consistency and sincerity. Job searching is never a simple “send CV -> wait,” but rather a journey of self-reflection, discovery, and the creation of new professional relationships.
If you too, like me, have faced a job search after 50, you know well how complex it can be: but determination, a clear method, and support (even virtual) can reduce stress and lead you with more confidence to every interview.
Experiment with this prompt in Italian, play with the questions, delve into ChatGPT’s advice, and then put it all into practice. That is where you will see concrete results.
If, instead, you want a “real” coach who is also an HR Director and a psychologist and who can support you step by step to make your strategy even more incisive, then write to me here.
