The human mind.

In short, the page highlights three issues.

The first concerns the alarms raised by those working in the very labs developing the most advanced models. Jacob Cox, a researcher at Anthropic, resigned, accusing OpenAI and Anthropic itself of “gambling” with the future of humanity.

The second concerns the conflict between safety, innovation, and geopolitical competition. The United States does not want to slow down and leave room for China; Europe, meanwhile, risks turning regulation into a competitive disadvantage.

The third shifts the question from the power of machines to the responsibility of human beings: who defines the goals? Who sets the limits? Who is accountable for the consequences?

A machine doesn’t need to be evil

I find myself particularly in line with Noci when he reminds us that AI is not a moral subject.

It doesn’t need to become evil, rebellious, or driven by instincts of conquest. It is enough for it to pursue a poorly formulated goal very well.

The example used in the article is simple: a machine is asked to clean a floor perfectly. If no limits or criteria are given, it might consider people and objects as obstacles to be eliminated. Not because it wants to cause harm, but because it is optimizing a stupid command with absolute consistency.

It is a fundamental point.

We are fascinated by the question: “How intelligent will AI become?”

We should be much more concerned about another question: “How capable are we of defining what we want to achieve, without erasing everything we cannot measure?”

It is already happening in companies. We ask to increase productivity and forget the quality of work. We ask to reduce costs and fail to see the loss of skills. We ask to identify the best candidates, but let the definition of “best” be derived from the profiles we have hired in the past.

AI does not necessarily invent our myopia. However, it can scale it, automate it, and give it the reassuring appearance of an objective decision.

“Man decides” is no longer enough

This is where I part ways, at least in part, with Noci’s thesis.

Saying that the problem with AI is “the human mind” is true. But it is only half true.

It risks suggesting that technology is a neutral executor and that everything can be resolved by giving better instructions. As if on one side there were a free, aware, and responsible human being and on the other a disciplined machine waiting for commands.

The actual relationship is much less orderly.

AI systems do not just execute. They select, synthesize, classify, suggest, and make some possibilities more visible than others. They do not necessarily take the final decision, but they construct the field in which that decision is made.

And whoever constructs the field already exercises a form of power.

If a system proposes three candidates instead of thirty, formally it will still be a person who chooses. But someone has already decided which twenty-seven people did not deserve to appear before their eyes.

If an assistant produces a fluid, plausible, and confident answer, we can still correct it. The problem is that the very formal quality of the answer reduces the likelihood that we feel the need to do so.

The human being remains “in the loop,” as they say. But we might remain there in the same way we keep our hands on the wheel while the car takes us in the direction set by someone else.

The most dangerous delegation is the one we don’t recognize

AI does not automatically make us less intelligent. It can, however, make us less vigilant.

Cognitive delegation rarely happens with an explicit decision: “From today, I stop thinking.”

It happens one inch at a time.

First we ask for a summary. Then an evaluation. Then a recommendation. Finally, we approve what the system proposes because it appears reasonable, because we are in a hurry, or because contradicting it would require more energy than following it.

The question, therefore, is not only whether the human being formally maintains the last word. It is whether they retain the skills, time, and psychological freedom necessary to truly pronounce it.

Here, critical thinking stops being a nice skill to include in training programs and becomes a safety infrastructure.

Thinking critically does not mean distrusting AI on principle, obsessively checking every comma, or nostalgically celebrating human superiority.

It means producing friction when everything seems too simple.

What assumption supports this answer?

What has been excluded?

What interests have guided the system?

What would change by modifying the goal?

Who suffers the consequences if the decision is wrong?

And, above all: am I still deciding or am I just confirming?

Apocalypse is a headline. Governance is a job

The expression “apocalypse alarm” also deserves attention.

The risk is building a false alternative: on one side the doomsayers who want to stop innovation; on the other the pragmatists who want to push it forward.

But safety and innovation are not necessarily enemies. A technology that proceeds without independent verification, identifiable responsibility, and the possibility of challenge is no longer innovative. It is just faster.

Alarms can certainly become rhetorical, self-serving, or disproportionate. But dismissing them as a brake means accepting the idea that speed is always a value and that slowing down, when we do not fully know the consequences, is a form of backwardness.

Sometimes slowing down does not mean being afraid. It means recovering the distance necessary to choose.

Co-Intelligence is not a division of tasks

This is why I do not believe in the reassuring formula that “AI proposes and the human decides.”

Co-Intelligence is not an administrative division of tasks between man and machine. It is a relationship in which AI expands possibilities and the human being retains judgment, responsibility, awareness of limits, and the capacity for dissent.

It is not enough to keep a human being at the end of the process. We must keep them cognitively present throughout the entire process.

And we must also look beyond the individual: at technological architectures, economic incentives, the data used, the values transformed into parameters, and the power of those who decide what the system will show us.

The problem with AI is certainly in the human mind.

But also in the environments designed to guide it.

The risk is not just that artificial intelligence takes control.

It is that we formally continue to have it, after having lost the ability to exercise it.

I read a page dedicated to the artificial intelligence revolution in the Sole 24 Ore on September 12, 2026.
